Sammie Ann Dees Self passed away Thursday, March 9, 2023, in Millington, Tennessee, at the age of 93. She was born in Tippah County, Mississippi, on October 18, 1929, to Mark and Mary Lou Dees. She was married to Norval Eugene Self from 1948 until his passing in 1994, and together they had two children. She worked for Sears Roebuck and Company at the old Memphis Crosstown store from the late 1950's into the 1960's, and then again at the Sears Memphis Central Service Center for almost 19 years from 1975 until her retirement in 1994. Her passions in life were family, bowling, and gardening. Well into her nineties, she could be found in her yard raking leaves, pulling weeds, or taking her chainsaw to some tree that had fallen out of her favor. Her cardiologist was impressed with her active lifestyle, but not all that happy about the chainsaw part (not that she cared what he thought).

Survivors include one son, James Norval Self; four grandchildren: James Daniel Self and his companion Rebecca Tickle, Jody Michael Henderson and his wife Susan, Amy Self Porterfield and her husband Lee, and Wendy Henderson Black and her husband Corey; six great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her daughter, Shelia Diane Self Henderson, and eight siblings.

Visitation will be from 1:00 PM until 2:00 PM, Friday, March 17, 2023, at Northridge Woodhaven Funeral Home, Millington, Tennessee, with services immediately thereafter. Burial will be at the Northridge Woodhaven Cemetery adjacent to the funeral home.
