Scanlon, Sr.

Martin Joseph Scanlon, Sr, (Marty), beloved husband, father and grandfather, departed this life on Saturday, December 29, 2018. Marty was born on July 13, 1942 in Jersey City, New Jersey, the son of Martin Scanlon and Ann Scanlon Ennis, who preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife of almost 54 years, Marguerite Reiman Scanlon of Memphis; his son, M.J. Scanlon; his daughter-in-law, Paola; and their daughter, (Marty's granddaughter) Micaela of Olive Branch, Mississippi; as well as his daughter, Marguerite Scanlon of Memphis. He is also survived by his brothers, William Scanlon of Apopka, Florida and Richard Scanlon (his wife Bea) of Delray Beach, Florida; and his sister, Susan Powell of Longwood, Florida. Marty enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in March of 1960. After boot camp, he reported to NAS Memphis for training as an Aviation Electronic Technician. He served 20 years and 3 tours in Vietnam, during which time he earned his Combat Aircrew Wings and six Air Combat Medals. He retired from the Marine Corps in 1980. He retired from the Marines on a Friday, and went to work the following Monday at Federal Express, where spent the next 24 year of his professional career. During that time Marty worked on the Boeing 727 Cockpit Standardization program, worked in Technology Services, and was a manager in Service Planning and Systems Support. Visitation will be on Thursday, January 3, 2019 at the Northridge Woodhaven Funeral Home at 6755 US Highway 51 North in Millington, Tennessee from 5:00-7:00 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, January 4, 2019 at St. William's Catholic Church at 4932 Easley Avenue in Millington, Tennessee at 10:00 a.m. Interment will be at the West Tennessee State Veterans Cemetery, in Memphis, at a later date.
