Larry was born in Little Rock, Arkansas on October 16, 1926; and after graduating from Little Rock High school, he served in the Army Air Force during the final year of World war II. It was during his service, while stationed in Alaska, that he directed his first choir at First Baptist Church in Anchorage, Alaska. This began two careers - part-time in church music while working in accounting at International Harvester. Possessed of a beautiful tenor voice, his great joy was singing. Over the years he served as music director or soloist at many churches: Antioch Baptist in Little Rock, Graceland Baptist in Memphis, Tennessee; Oakhurst Baptist in Clarksdale, Mississippi; Calvary Baptist Church in West Memphis, Arkansas; First Baptist Church in West Memphis; Charjean Baptist, Eudora Baptist and Georgian Hills Baptist - all in Memphis. He was also the leader of the local Shrine Chanters group, in 2003-2004 became president of the Southeast Shrine Chanters Association.
He had one daughter, Laurenda Kay Cunningham with Willadean Walters Cunniingham, both of Memphis. He has one surviving brother, Wallace Cunningham of Little Rock, and numerous nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his brothers, Bradley and Morris,
