Jerry Lee "Sonny" Sanders, 76, of Memphis died Friday, March 21, 2014 at Baptist Memorial Hospital Memphis. "Sonny" was born in Memphis, Tennessee on June 2, 1937 to Marion and Mazie Wiginton Sanders. He graduated from Humes High School in 1956. He went to Arkansas State on a football scholarship, returning home shortly after when he blew out a knee and could not continue his football passion. When his boys were young "Sonny" coached FRA (Frayser Recreation Association) baseball, basketball and football. "Sonny" is a Marine Veteran and retired after 30 years from the Marine Reserves. He also retired after 40 years with Memphis Light, Gas & Water where he was a Crew Leader. "Sonny" was an avid golfer. He enjoyed his retirement career at Quail Ridge Golf Course. He is survived by his wife of 29 years, Joyce Naylor Sanders; two sons, Jerry Lee Sanders Jr. and Brian Keith Sanders both of Ellendale; step daughters, Cheryl Lynn (Rich) Farmer; Dee Dee Ann (Ricky) Sulcer; and Lori Sue (Tom) Thienel; four grandchildren; and four great grandchildren. The family will receive friends at Northridge Woodhaven Funeral Home on Monday, March 24, 2014 from 12:00 -2:00 p.m. Memorial services begin at 2:00 p.m. Private interment will be at Northridge Woodhaven Cemetery. The family requests memorials be sent to the charity of the donor''s choice.
