Obituary

Dr. Elbert T. Gill, Jr., 83, of Memphis, died Saturday, March 29, 2014. He was a graduate of Millington Central High School, William R. Moore School of Technology, and the Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport, IA. Dr. Gill was a well-known Chiropractor and statesman. He served with distinction as the State Representative for District 88 (Frayser) from 1966 to 1986, where he chaired the Calendar and Rules Committee and led the Shelby County delegation. In 1987, he was appointed by Governor Ned R. McWherter to the cabinet position of Commissioner of Conservation where he worked until 1991 to improve the Tennessee State Parks and protect state wildlife refuges and wetlands. Dr. Gill was honored by the University of Memphis as a recipient of The Golden Tiger Award for his years of service. The Tennessee Board of Regents named the Frayser branch of Shelby State Community College the Elbert T. Gill, Jr. Campus in his honor. Dr. Gill lived the majority of his life as an active supporter of youth sports, a tireless worker for his community, and an avid fisherman and hunter. Dr. Gill was preceded in death by his father, Elbert, Sr., his mother, Mozelle, and his daughter, Patricia Gill. He is survived by his wife, Grace Gill, of Memphis, and his five children: Sherry Hipp, of Memphis, TN; Deborah Dale of Memphis, TN; Scott Gill, of Rockwall, TX; Alan Gill, of San Diego, CA; and Candice Griggs, of Collierville, TN; eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He is also survived by two brothers, Dr. Tom Gill of Bartlett, TN, Michael Gill of Millington, TN, and a sister, Dorothy Watkins of Sardis, MS. The family expresses their sincere appreciation to the staff of Carriage Court Assisted Living (Memory Gardens Unit) and Crossroads Hospice. The family will receive friends Tuesday, April 1, at 11 a.m. at Northridge Woodhaven Funeral Home on Highway 51 North, with the service immediately following at noon. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Shelby Residential Vocational Services (SRVS), 3971 Knight Arnold, Memphis, TN 38111 or the Alzheimer's Association .
