Carol Chisholm, 85, died gently at her beloved Central Gardens home on January 16, 2013. Carol was well loved by family and long-time friends and by nearly everyone she met. She genuinely cared and liked people and was known by name everywhere she went. When she couldn''t leave home the last few months, her family found that people at businesses in Midtown always asked, "How''s Miss Carol? Tell her we miss her." Carol was born March 5, 1927, and grew up in Demopolis, AL, where she met her husband Bob while they were both working at WXAL. They were married until he died in 1991. After moving to Winona, Miss., in 1958 to put WONA radio on the air, Bob and Carol enjoyed award-winning careers as radio broadcasters. Carol''s daily radio show "Mainly for Women" won state-wide awards. Both Bob and Carol were loved in Winona because they always stood against injustice and offered kindness and respect to people who didn''t get that from others. After moving to Memphis in 1970, Carol worked at WDIA''s FM station. They were members of Second Presbyterian Church, where Carol was a mainstay of the World Missions Committee. She had missionary friends all around the world. The maintenance and kitchen staff at the church all knew her by name. Among her grandchildren''s friends, she was known as Grammy. At Community Bible Study, where she and her friend Syrena Beall taught three-year-olds for 23 years, she sent all children home with a kiss tucked in their collars for later use. There were many things Carol loved: her dogs, writing and reciting funny poetry, the Atlanta Braves, gardening, PBS''s Mr. Rogers, word games, the beach, reading out loud, turtlenecks and khaki pants, coral lipstick and all kinds of people she did not have a snobbish or prejudiced bone in her body. She adored her family, but her greatest love was reserved for her savior Jesus Christ. Carol is survived by her daughter, Candy Justice Willis and son-in-law Bob Willis; grandchildren William Justice and Kathryn Leache and husband Josh. Her greatest joy was getting to hold her great-grandson, Matthew Leache, born December 3. She also leaves her dedicated and loving caregivers Martha Crump and Daisy Crump. Services will be at Second Presbyterian Church. Visitation will be held today from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Salmon Room and the funeral will be at 1 p.m. Friday in the church Chapel.
