Obituary for Barbara Hawes:
Barbara Ann Hawes of Memphis, Tennessee died March 11, 2017 at the age of 77. She was born July 9, 1939 in Covington, Tennessee and at the age of 3 moved with her family to Memphis where she became somewhat of a local child celebrity, singing with her sister, Shelby, every Saturday on the TV show Young America Sings'' hosted by Dick Hawley. By 1957, Barbara had graduated from Humes High School in Memphis, where she attended with some guy named Elvis and then entered the workforce at Sears Crosstown. Later she worked as an accounts specialist at Patrick Welding Company for 7 years. In 1958 Barbara married the love of her life, A.L. Hawes and together raised two spirited children, DeWayne and Terri, in the rolling hills of Frayser. Nothing seemed to bring her more joy and happiness than her grandchildren, Cory and Chelsea. She loved being their "BB" and enjoyed sharing every special occasion in their lives. Anxious to see the birth of her first great-grandchild, Hudson, seemed to breathe life into Barbara which helped her press on a little longer with her illness. Watching him take his "first steps" brought the last few smiles of her life, just 3 days before her death. Over the years she became consistently known for her keen interests in: a meticulously maintained array of plants and trees, watching "Manning style" football, listening to various styles of music and watching Jeopardy. The most important thing, since her baptism September 5, 1964, was that Barbara lived her life with a strong faith as one of Jehovah''s Witnesses. In her later years, while battling cancer, it brought her great joy to send greeting cards to her dear friends and family with the hopes of being an encouragement to them, as they had been to her.
Barbara is survived by her husband, A.L. Hawes; son, DeWayne Hawes (wife Teresa); daughter, Terri Davis (husband Tony); two grandchildren, Cory Hawes (wife Casey); Chelsea Henry (husband Darren); one great-grandson, Hudson Hawes; sister, May Jewell Hammons and many beloved nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 12:30 p.m. until 2:00 p.m., on Wednesday, March 15, 2017 at Northridge Woodhaven Funeral Home, 6755 Highway 51, North Millington, TN. The funeral services will follow immediately after at 2:00pm.
