Arthur "Art" Boyett Hagler, 90, died Thursday July 19, 2012 in Memphis, TN. Art was born on December 5, 1921 in Buena Vista, GA. He graduated from Marion County High School in 1940 and enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He became a Naval Aviator as an Enlisted Pilot, flying in the Pacific in WWII on several carriers. Art was shot down twice, the first time being rescued by a U.S. Submarine and the second time he was captured by the Japanese and spent 18 months as a POW. After the war he continued his Navy Career, serving in the VP Squadron and retired in 1960 as a Senior Chief Aviation Structural Mechanic (AMCS/E-8). In the early 1960''s he founded Hagler Aero Service and he was instrumental in developing Charles W. Baker Airport into a thriving aviation center. Art retired from the airport operations in 1988, but continued to be active in aviation, flying his last solo flight at the age of 85 and his last flight as a co-pilot as recently as last year. After retirement he continued to work as an FAA Airframe & Engine Inspector well into his mid 80''s. Art was active in civic organizations and was a 32nd degree Mason with the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, S.J., U.S.A., and a member of the Raleigh Lodge #770. He was also an active member of the Shriners and was active in the Shriners Scottish Rite Burn Center, often flying patients in and out of the area for care. He was active in forming the original Memphis Bell Restoration Project and an active supporter of both University of Tennessee and Memphis State Football programs. Arthur is survived by his Nephews: Dr. James R. (Kay) Hagler, Richard C. (Tasca) Hagler and Charles (Sally) Hagler, Niece: Ann Hagler, Grand-Nephews: James R. (Amy) Hagler Jr. & Carlton Hagler, Grand-Nieces: Jennifer (Howard) Brandon, Devan Hagler & Merideth H. (Adam) Bryan, Great-Nephew: J. Raleigh Hagler III, Great-Niece: Sydney Rose Sandoval, Special friend and companion: Janelle Barganier & her grandson Toma Gunton, and Special Friends: Lynne Choate, Glyn Graves & Ed Meier. Visitation will be held from 5:00 - 7:00pm with a Masonic service on Saturday July 21, 2012 at Northridge Woodhaven Funeral Home in Millington, TN. A Celebration of Life Service with full Military Honors will be held at 2:00pm on Sunday July 22, 2012 at the funeral home. Interment will be in Northridge Woodhaven Cemetery in Millington.
